Songwriter Fred Thomas owes a widely mixed catalog to his overwhelming prolificacy, but it's good to hear Fill Up the Room, SLGTM's first truly ambitious studio effort since 2004's Every Night. The best parts of this LP bring in the furthest-reaching sonic elements -- the afropop guitar on "Money in the Afterlife" and the battery of ethnic percussion and tape loops on "Whitey Hands" -- but even when Thomas sticks with the standard fare of navel-gazing acoustic strum ("Peg") and revived '60s pop ("Edison Girls"), the record still sounds brilliantly inventive.
