The Unseen Empire
Released: Apr 2011
Label: Nuclear Blast
These Swedes never really stay in death-metal mode for very long on their fifth album. Tracks like "Seers of the Eschaton," "Astronomicon" and "Alpha and Omega" open roaring and evil over ugly blastbeats, but before long bad cop Roberth Karlsson's troll grunts inevitably get bumped by good cop Lars Palmqvist's screamo croons. One of them frequently shrieks like a witch, too, and the guitars occasionally switch into music-school wheedling and even (in "Domination Agenda") heavy arena rock. Lyrics, inasmuch as they are audible, seem to have something to do with lizard people ruling the planet.
