A composer's album as much as a guitarist's outing -- but really both of those things -- this set is a lucky find. Kickstarted and self-released, it deserves a wider hearing than its promotional budget will inspire. Odd rhythms abound: There's a piece in 11/4 for oboe trio and guitar ("Short Piece No. 1") as well as a grooving tune in 7/4 for a post-rock-feeling guitar/drum/bass setup ("Severed"). But never does the sophistication overwhelm the players. There's a quality of looseness here -- whether during quiet passages or amid ecstatic ones -- that is rare, and rewarding to hear.
