Scott Walker was already transitioning from a pop idol into a singular art-pop star at the end of his tenure with the Walker Brothers. On his first solo LP, he translates the work of the brilliant Belgian songwriter Jacques Brel, sings covers of interesting MOR material (like the movie theme "You're Gonna Hear From Me") and croons his own individualistic, brilliantly eccentric songs. "Montague Terrace (In Blue)" shows how much Walker was studied by every one from David Bowie and Roxy Music to Echo & the Bunnymen and Pulp. This was a huge success in Britain but barely made waves in the U.S.
