Beautiful Girls (Single)
Released: Aug 2007
This bit of pre-fab summer pop deserves every inch of airtime it gets. Sure, you could quibble with a single that uses the word "suicidal" more times than a Sylvia Plath biography, but Kingston cancels out that darkness with a comfy sample from Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" and fresh-faced, G-rated lyrics that yearn the way only a 17-year-old boy can. The result is a hybrid creature born in Jamaica, raised on a diet of doo-wop and cast before mainstream rap fans. In other words, sheer (if disposable) pop genius.
