¡Sin Rumba No Hay Son!
Septeto Nacional

If Cuban son has become shorthand for the island and its storied musical past, Septeto Nacional, formed in 1927, is something of a living museum piece. The group first introduced the trumpet to son in 1929, and it's gigged almost continuously since then, renewing itself each decade with ever-younger members. This album may not add much to a genre that exhausted itself in the Buena Vista Social Club and its many spin-offs, but it puts itself through the familiar paces with such ease and elasticity it's an absolute joy to hear. This release pays homage to rumba, the style that preceded son.
