When the bossa nova wave hit American shores, Capitol Records snatched Brazil's Sergio Mendes up and let him cut a couple of records in the loose Getz/Gilberto style. They didn't sell, and Capitol quickly released Mendes, who went on to have great success at Herb Alpert's record label with the pop-bossa monolith Brasil '66. Regardless of sales, these early Capitol sessions have an innocence and purity missing from some of Mendes' later work.
