Poet, activist, composer of musicals, record producer -- Serj Tankian wears many masks when he's not fronting alt-metal kingpins System of a Down. Much like his solo debut, 2007's Elect the Dead, Imperfect Harmonies is an intensely progressive blend of symphonic art pop, electronica, modern jazz, world music and off-Broadway theatricality. It's beyond ambitious, though not entirely successful. Its grandeur and bombast are so dense, so unrelenting, they leave very little room for the listener to catch his breath. Of course, fans of Mike Patton, Primus and Perry Farrell will surely disagree.
