Crow has been referencing old-school soul at least since 1998's "My Favorite Mistake," but never before for a whole album. She defines the genre widely: Stax horns, reggae lilts, country gospel, quiet storm, Supremes quotes, Jackson 5 and (with Justin Timberlake's help) Terence Trent D'Arby covers. Current events spiel "Say What You Want" provides a break from all the universal romance; "Roses and Midnight," a long, flute-fusioned wah-wah vamp, might be her funkiest track ever. Now, if only her languorous tempos and slurred delivery didn't frequently cut into the groove.
