Recorded in Freetown, Sierra Leone and New Orleans, Rise & Shine has all the sass and shine of a band that's seen its life restored. The members are back home, reunited with family and friends who survived a devastating civil war. The group wastes no time in turning its eyes outward, devoting songs to global warming, hunger and poverty, often couching them in inviting reggae. But they turn it to 11 when they strap on palm wine guitars on songs like the utterly addictive "Tamagbondorsu." This is African pop at its best -- raw, joyful and always rooted in place.
