Sudan's Ahmed Gallab plays percussion for Of Montreal, Yeasayer and Caribou, so it's not surprising that his debut LP as Sinkane bears comparison to those groups' colorful, worldly pop. Afrobeat serves as the starting point for many of the songs, with tricky rhythms rendered effortlessly danceable and kitted out in muscular electric bass and glancing funk guitar, but Gallab's curiosity leads him all over the place, from astral jazz ("Mars") to rock-steady psych ("Making Time"). The concise, varied album rewards immersion; it's also tempting to put "Runnin'" on an endless loop. It's addictive.
