Sixtoo sprang out of the turntablist times of the 1990s, a hip-hop devotee versed in the disciplines of rap, scratch and graff all the way from Halifax, Nova Scotia, with the given name of Vaughn Robert Squire. Remaining fashionably under the radar, albeit putting out records on the likes of Anticon until the turn of the millennium, the release of Duration in early 2000 -- hailed as an instrumental hip-hop classic -- inevitably upped his profile. In 2001, he moved to Montreal and started working with the Vertical Form label until 2003, when the apparently omniscient folk at Ninja Tune came knocking at his door to initiate the relationship that spawned the intriguing Chewing On Glass & Other Miracle Cures LP, a prime example of Sixtoo's technique of sampling "live" artists. As is par for the course, Sixtoo releases work under a variety of guises and with assorted collaborators operating as the Sebutones with Buck 65, as part of 1,200 Hobos and working with people like DJ Moves, DJ Signify, Sage Francis, Matth and Stigg of the Dump. However, at the bottom of all this achingly of-the-moment hipsterism lies a reflective talent who focuses more on mood than image, shaping appropriately multilayered soundscapes for these fractured days.
