Skrillex's debut album is full of surprises -- appropriately, for a record that arrived with no warning. Sure, he drops plenty of his usual serrated bass lines on "All Is Fair in Love and Brostep" and "Try It Out," while "Recess" adopts the concussion-grenade melodies so prevalent in current EDM. But he also proves he can go wider (and weirder), from the Dirtybird-styled house bounce of "Stranger" to the Burial-inspired "Fire Away." "Doompy Poomp" crosses glitchy hip-hop with easy listening kitsch, while "F*ck That" pays tribute to dubstep's roots -- surprisingly well, too.
