Released: Jan 1991
A stronger Saint Vitus/doom metal feel pervades this, Sleep's debut album, unleashed on the world in 1991. The ultra Sabbath-ness they became known for through the sacraments of Holy Mountain is in its formative stages here, not necessarily a bad thing. The harried, misery-laden vocals are great and also you get to hear the band as a four piece, before original second guitarist Justin Marler went off to become a monk, just one more of the many legends surrounding this seminal band. Song titles like "Numb," "Stillborn," "The Suffering" and "Scourge" live up to advertising.
