With apes all over the cover, songs called "Simian Manifesto" and "Ape Outro," and more than one mention of living in trees, this eighth album from San Francisco's premier power/fantasy metal unit presumably has a concept based loosely on Planet of the Apes. As usual, Mike Scalzi and Angelo Tringali's guitar playing is pyrotechnic, the rhythms gallop and the sense of humor is just a little off. Opener "The Unchback of Notre Doom" is either a doom metal parody that nails or the best riff Tony Iommi never wrote.
