Snoop Dogg's friend 2Pac was murdered two months before the release of Tha Doggfather, and this uneven album reflects an artist whose world was in disarray. "All I want to do is make the whole crowd bounce y'all," he claimed. On "Snoop's Upside Ya Head," he rapped, "No matter where you from, we can all get dumb insane," and renounced the East Coast-West Coast violence that was tearing the rap community apart. Tha Doggfather isn't a total disaster -- "Groupie" and "Up Jump Tha Boogie" bang -- but it would take Snoop several years and a break from Death Row to get his career back on track.
