Goodbye 20th Century
by Sonic Youth
Released: Nov 1999
After a series of self-released EPs, Sonic Youth got serious about their non-Geffen Records output with this pre-millennial grab bag of greatest noise-hits from the modern-classical realm. That means runs at compositions by Christian Wolff ("Edges"), John Cage ("Six"), and Pauline Oliveros ("Six for New Time"). Not all of the performances are the final word on these pieces, nor are they meant to be -- though the take on Steve Reich's conceptual "Pendulum Music" is authoritative. After years of making avant-garde tricks safe for airplay, this is the band's reclamation of its outsider status.
