Behold Sonic Youth's most polarizing album, inspiring an infamously caustic 0.0 Pitchfork review for its Big Apple-glorifying, mellow-mumbling mood. Not a lot of catharsis here, it's true: "Nevermind (What Was It Anyway)" is a bit too tame to live up to its title, though Kim Gordon rasping, "Boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider/ Girls go to Mars, become rock stars" is still hilarious. This is a weird one, insular and cryptic, but 9/11 a year later frankly lent it a retroactive poignancy and innocence, and Lee Ranaldo's battered-Beat-poet title track is actually all the catharsis you need.
