by Sonic Youth
Released: Jan 1995
With Washing Machine, released in 1995, Sonic Youth seemingly put out a good old-fashioned Sonic Youth album, replete with constant telepathic guitar interplay, left-of-center hooks and feedback on top of feedback. Thankfully, the unbearable pretentiousness of that Jet-whatever album is a thing of the past here, and even when Lee Ranaldo fails to bring back the salad days ("Saucer-Like"), the extended title cut and the near 20-minute "The Diamond Sea" -- which is like something off The Grateful Dead's Europe '72, in the best way -- make up for it.
