Following in the footsteps of Zomby, Lone and Shed, Paul Woolford pays tribute to the glory days of breakbeat rave with his debut album as Special Request. All the old-school signifiers are here: Amen breaks, Hoover bass, Mentasm stabs and bouncing pianos; in "Soundboy Killer," a jungle MC's entreaties to clear the stage drop listeners smack in the middle of a basement party, ca. 1994. But Woolford's period obsessions don't stop him from making hard-hitting tunes that sound utterly of the moment. The record epitomizes the hybrid sound of U.K. club music in 2013.
