Spin Doctors might've emerged from New York's jam band scene in the late '80s, yet their debut was pure pop. Over playfully funky grooves and potent slap bass, hippie trickster Chris Barron unloads the most audaciously absurd (and stoned) rock and roll poetry since Steve Miller introduced his grab bag of smokers, tokers, jokers and, uh, Maurice. Actually, the guy was rather prescient in the way he incorporated elements of rap into his bewildering jive talk. The hits -- "Two Princes," "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" -- were some of the most relentless earworms of the '90s.
