This young South African is awash in influences, and it's not hard to suss out who they are: Diplo and M.I.A. Who can argue with that? It's the sound du jour. And so Mshini Wam is bratty, glitchy, flooded with the dance-beats-via-the-global-ghetto sound those artists are famous for. But it's also fresh, rocking with a distinct South African pulse that marks Mathambo as someone who -- for all his immersion in Western dance culture -- is actually located in the third world, rather than mining it from a distance ... and that is his strength. One to watch.
