This album shows why this Massachusetts-based outfit was known as alt metal's most tuneful, song-oriented band, selling over 15 million records. Still tormented, but seemingly less dysfunctional than when they first offended Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst (who appears on a live version of "Outside" with Aaron Lewis), Staind grew in delivery and subject matter during the 10 years this disc covers. They are more powerful in repose on songs such as "Everything Changes" or "Zoey Jayne" than when they careen down the grim alleys of the mind on songs like "Mudshovel" or "It's Been Awhile."
