And you thought Fairport Convention sounded like druids?! Holy Stonehenge, Batman. Steeleye Span kicked into high gear on 1972's Below the Salt. Replacing Martin Carthy and Ashley Hutchings with Bob Johnson and Rick Kemp, the band gets beefy around the ol' maypole. This album isn't moody like a lot of British folk-rock (Nick Drake, for example); Below the Salt is full of merrily drunken romps through the shire. It's good to know someone was partying in the era of Watergate and Vietnam.
