Saxophonist Steve Cole combines his creamy smooth jazz style with the kind of sumptuous strings-n-woodwinds backing that Chris Botti and Diana Krall have made fashionable. Cole picks a nice selection of modern and classic standards -- Burt Bacharach and The Beatles sit side by side with Nancy Wilson, Ray Charles and Julie London, with highlights "Cry Me a River" and "The Look of Love." Cole also smartly handles the Guess Who's "Undun," turning the astringent put-down into the kind of languorous carpet-roller that would fit well alongside the suave David Niven in the Pink Panther.
