If the instrumentation here sounds a little hip, it's because Steve Earle recorded this album after taking up residency in New York City -- hence the album's apt moniker -- and John King from the Dust Brothers produced it. "Steve's Hammer" is a tribute to Pete Seeger that Bruce Springsteen would approve of. Earle's wife Allison Moorer lends lilting harmonies on "Days Aren't Long Enough" and inspiration on the sweet "Come Home to Me." What's truly amazing is that Earle can sing over a trendy-sounding, electronic, looped drum beat and still sound classic and timeless.
