Steve Gadd was a go-to jazz/rock session drummer in the 1970s and '80s, making a name for himself recording with everyone from George Benson to Chet Baker, David Sanborn and Jim Croce. Here, Gadd leads a hard bop quartet that features Hammond B-3 organist Joey DeFrancesco. This live date recalls the classic 1960s Blue Note party platters by the likes of Stanley Turrentine and Lou Donaldson. The warm yet funky session evokes the feeling of laughing with old friends. The drummer hasn't mellowed with age but he's grown wiser, becoming the bedrock for the ensemble rather than its focal point.
