On the comic icon's second album of bluegrass, he shows off his prodigious talent as a banjo player. Rare Bird Alert ambles along with the ease of a back porch jam session. Although the banjo has always been a part of Martin's act, he didn't hook up with The Steep Canyon Rangers until 2009. Since then, the group has performed on Prairie Home Companion, at Carnegie Hall and at New Orleans Jazzfest. The songs on Rare Bird Alert follow the rules of modern bluegrass, with modest production values and Martin's playing taking center stage, with good reason.
