The Joker
Steve Miller Band
Released:
Apr 1991
Label:
Capitol
The title track is one of Miller's most affecting FM hits, a timeless, innocent celebration of being young, carefree and perpetually stoned. It's also pretty much the only reason to play this album, as other cuts that aim for the same mix of nonsense rhymes and irresistible boogie riffs mostly just demonstrate how hard that is to pull off without seeming shallow or self-satisfied. And listeners attracted to the casually charming picker who narrates "The Joker" will likely find him a crushing boor on the tracks where he starts taking himself seriously as a seen-it-all bluesman.
