For his Daniel Variations, Reich draws from the Bible's Book of Daniel and the words of Daniel Pearl, the Jewish American reporter who was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan in 2002 by Islamic extremists. The composer's trademark driving, cutting rhythms are set against long lines for voice and strings throughout the variations, and the unrelenting pulse underpinning the legato lines gives them a desperate, ominous quality.
