Sun Ra never stopped exploring. So by 1978, you'd expect him to be experimenting with drum machines (and turning them to his own ends). The opening seconds of the half-hour title cut prove how charming it is to hear Ra dealing out organ chords over a sprightly, Casio-like drum beat. (Before long, he pivots back toward "Space Is the Place.") "Dance of the Cosmo Aliens" is even more frenetic and enjoyable. These live jams, cut in Milan, feature a small combo that includes John Gilmore. And not everything is disco-influenced, either: "Sky Blues" is tasty soul-jazz, Ra-style.
