Some Blues But Not The Kind That's Blue
by Sun Ra
Released: Jan 2008
Sun Ra is celebrated for his outsider status, his Arkestra's wild free jazz and his mischievous, is-he-kidding-or-not? song titles and fashion sense. But there are always elements to Sun Ra's music that his fans overlook. Here, a couple of Sun Ra originals mingle with a number of standards. An early swing feel breaks through on the frenetic title track, and Sun Ra plays a sensitive piano part to "Tenderly" that isn't that different from how Duke approached the standard. Often the Arkestra sounds underrehearsed, but their looseness (which can approach sloppiness) can be part of their appeal.
