You'd hate music too if you just painstakingly worked out your finest, catchiest collection of tunes ever. Growing up after a long hiatus has made Superchunk one fine power-pop band; just see "Me and You and Jackie Mittoo," "FOH" and "Breaking Down." Even the slow songs are a big deal ("Trees of Barcelona," "What Can We Do"). But even among the kaleidoscope of melody, I Hate Music is tinged with darkness and regret: check the hardcore-paced "Staying Home" or the jangling agoraphobia of "Out of the Sun." They don't hate music. But questioning it might've been the best decision they ever made.
