Superchunk helped put Matador Records on the map. One of the label's first signed acts, the band helped kick-start the evolution of indie rock in the '90s, beginning with its 1990 debut album. Their punk music is scrappy and hasty yet nurtured on skittish pop hooks. Defining disenchantment with the line "I'm working, but I'm not working for you," "Slack Motherf*cker" is one of the great indie-rock anthems. The band continues to shred on the label guitarist/singer Mac McCaughan and bassist Laura Ballance founded, Merge Records, a tastemaking indie powerhouse of its own.
