It was nearly two decades ago that Quincy Jones introduced Tamia on Q's Jook Joint. Her fifth album, Beautiful Surprise, shows how she has struggled to fulfill those expectations. She has a wonderful voice and lyrics about married life, from dressing up for her man on "Him" to yearning for him when he goes to work on "Lose My Mind." But her producers, which include Salaam Remi and others, turn songs like "Still Love You" and "Because of You" into bland slow jams. Quiet storm is not synonymous with blandness, of course, but there's something missing in Beautiful Surprise.
