Phaedra
Tangerine Dream
Released:
Jan 1974
Label:
CM Virgin
Tangerine Dream's first album to feature the repetitive, synth-heavy sound they are most identified with, Phaedra was the maiden release on Richard Branson's then-fledgling Virgin Records and was a massive hit in the U.K. despite receiving zero airplay. Fans of tripped-out space rock a la Pink Floyd's "On the Run" need to hear the 18-minute title cut, but the entire record will appeal to anyone who thinks Kraftwerk are all you need when it comes to electronic rock. Track 2, "Mysterious Semblance…," is a throwback to Zeit, and the next song, "Movements of a Visionary," is downright scary.
