Something about Cape Verdean music always feels like a daydream, or a mirage: the suggestion of water in a shimmering desert, an elusive island bobbing in an endless ocean. Even though Tcheka's music shares so little with Cesaria Evora's dolorous morna, the slippery sense that things aren't quite what they seem remains -- with a familiar undercurrent of sadness. But Tcheka's musical reveries -- tethered to acoustic guitar and occasionally doing a pas de deux with an accordion -- take an expansive view of life and his home country, bolstered by Brazilian singer-songwriter Lenine's production help.
