Ted Nash, the fiery post-bop saxophonist, pays tribute to the work of Henry Mancini, the famed Hollywood composer. Mancini not only brought cool jazz to TV and films but he also employed Nash's father and uncle, both of whom were part of the 1950s West Coast scene. Nash sidesteps his childhood favorite "The Pink Panther," but does rip through "The Party," switches to flute on the beautifully tragic "Soldier in the Rain" (the composer's personal favorite) and plays the aching "Two for the Road," perhaps Mancini's most neglected masterpiece. Nash's longtime pianist Frank Kimbrough offers fine support.
