This pair of tracks from Apples In Stereo's New Magnetic Wonder proves that the band doesn't need to hide behind the paisley-printed studio effects to make its catchy psychedelic pop songs work. Sure, the background harmonies and lead vocals on "Play Tough" are a bit rough around the edges, but as Robert Schneider's voice splinters on the high notes, there's no shortage of loveably scrappy character. The B-side "Open Eyes" has even more grit, suggesting that the Apples might have missed their true calling as a garage band.
