If you've ever asked yourself "What was happening in England after the Smiths quit and Oasis was but a gleam in the Gallaghers' eyes?" then you should know about the Auteurs (not to mention the Stone Roses, XTC, the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Verve). While not as critically well-received as its predecessor, Now I'm a Cowboy contains "Lenny Valentino," a minor-key rocker that's arguably the best song in the band's catalog. "Underground Movies" makes good use of cello and piano and shows off the urbane pluck of songwriter Luke Haines.
