Moondog Matinee was not well received when it was released in 1973. Both fans and critics craved yet another masterpiece on par with the Band's first three albums. What they got instead was a collection of raucous rock 'n' roll covers a la Sha Na Na. The group basically turned back the clock to the mid-1960s and morphed into the Hawks. Decades later, however, the album sounds great! On chestnuts like "Mystery Train" and "I'm Ready," the Band sound crisp, funky and ready for a barroom brawl to break out.
