The Beautiful South
Released:
Apr 1992
Label:
Island Mercury
Named after Britain's phone-sex prefix, this is the band's finest outing and finds lyricist/lead singer Paul Heaton exploring relationships and messed-up individuals. "Old Red Eyes Is Back" is the first of many of Heaton's alcoholic odes, and "We Are Each Other" shows how artfully the band puts a twisted pop song together. Vocalist Briana Corrigan refused to sing the concert favorite "36 D," but check out "Rocking Chair" to hear the band show its feminine side. There isn't a bum track on here, yet the Beautiful South's biting English wit would ensure their exclusion from American culture.
