Welcome To The Beautiful South
Released: Oct 1989
On this debut, lyricist Paul Heaton -- one of the three vocalists -- often tackles the music industry itself using breezy retro pop, soul and upbeat world music. "From Under the Covers," a Merseyside rocker, could be a tune by the Housemartins (Heaton and fellow vocalist Dave Hemingway's old band). "Have You Ever Been Away" notes that the new class of warmongers never seem to have been in battle themselves, while "You Keep It All In" praises traditional male reserve. "Love Is" offers one of Heaton's finest lines: "I remember your face/ The dance was slow/ 'Easy' by the Commodores/ And you said 'No.'"
