Budos is bigger. They didn't add members, they haven't shifted their formula significantly -- it's still soul music fed on an African diet -- but something has changed. They own the music now; they've composed from inside it, performing live until the songs were lodged in each player -- no more aping Ethiopiques, no more Fela-lite. Then they committed it to tape. This is how records used to be made, and this is why those records last: You will cower under the towering horns, shake to the convulsive percussion, and thank your lucky stars that retro soul has produced its first doom-rock record.
