Tande-La
The Creole Choir Of Cuba
Released:
Oct 2010
Label:
Real World Records
The distinct musical culture of Haitian-Cubans is the subject matter of this world-renowned choir, and Tande-La ("listen") is resplendent with musical narratives of that heritage: vodoun ritual music, Afro-diasporic folk songs, boleros, freedom songs from the Duvalier regime (which take on a double meaning when sung by descendants of slaves brought to Cuba to work on plantations). It's a beautiful repertoire movingly, if a bit formally (they are a choir, after all) performed by fantastic singers who are as invested in folk traditions as they are in impeccable vocal training and skill.
