When the banjo begins plucking like raindrops on the darkly enigmatic "A Record Year for Rainfall," it demonstrates how well the Decemberists understand the power of careful orchestration. But the better tune is the lovely "Raincoat Song." Colin Meloy's aching melody and simple strum doesn't have a whiff of the musty, bookish pretension that occasionally shrouds his writing. The third in the Always a Bridesmaid EP series, it may well be the best.
