It's not so much that the Decemberists went all pop on this single from their major label debut, it's that they were always this catchy, and maybe you just never noticed. "O Valencia" is some dang sticky stuff. Colin Meloy's adenoidal warble is in full effect singing about star-crossed lovers, and the chorus is so pleasant, full of chimes and organs, that you almost don't notice he's singing about a blood-soaked girlfriend and his character's plans to "burn this whole city down."
