Anyone down with the rockumentary Dig! may recall the two diametric personalities from the Brian Jonestown Massacre: troubled jerk Anton Newcombe and witty jester Joel Gion, who now fronts San Francisco's Dilettantes with a big charismatic voice, providing for an undeniably fun and festive rock 'n' roll listening party. On the band's debut album, Gion lets guitarists Jefferson Parker and Brock Galland unleash their own songs, allowing for a delightfully unpredictable affair. Tinges of the BJM's '60s-inspired garage rock still surface, but with a bit more taste and polish.
