On Love King, the third in a series of "Love" albums, The-Dream burnishes his reputation as a crazily imaginative songwriter. Much of his appeal lies in infusing traditional R&B with post-modern irony: On "Make Up Bag," he advises men to take their girl shopping if they get caught cheating, and "Florida University" revolves around a chant of "UF! UF!" Sometimes, with titles like "Sex Intelligent" and "Panties to the Side," it's difficult to tell if he's ever serious or just a clever satirist. "The Abyss," where he threatens to kill an old girlfriend by drowning her, is a rare dark moment.
