Like to wear black eyeliner to the beach? Here's your band. The Drums do a curious (i.e., awesome) combination of post-punk surf music, a sort of Beach Boy facade for a heart that pumps to the sounds of The Cure. Even more pronounced on their sophomore album, this mix of ghostly analog synths, breezy handclaps, ooh ooh's and ringing surf guitar is a foil to frontman Jonathan Pierce's atheistic infatuation with the afterlife and the afterlove. The sunnier fare, at least in melody, bookends Portamento, while the darker stuff ("Searching for Heaven," "Please Don't Leave") seeps in midway.
